I Live In Terror Of Not Being Misunderstood (The Critic as Artist)

Many misconceptions exist about Oscar Wilde. People tend to think that he was a light-hearted dandy, that his comedies are nonsensical and his aphorisms not much more than just funny - in short, that he is not to be taken seriously. He himself did everything he could to promote this picture.

Jorge Luis Borges remarked: 'By reading and re-reading Wilde in the course of the years, I have noticed a fact which his panegyrists seem not to have suspected: the simple, easy to verify fact that Wilde was nearly always right.' This is true. But Oscar's cleverness has all too often been overlooked because of his extravagant behaviour.
