Zanzibar - Pemba
- Zanzibar
Otherwise known as Spice Island. It has lured travellers to its shores for centuries, some
in search of trade; some in search of plunder and still others in search of an idyllic home.
The Sumerians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Indians, Chinese, Persians, Portuguese,
Omani Arabs, Dutch and English have been here at one time or other. The old Stone town of
Zanzibar is one of the most fascinating places on the East Coast.
- Pemba
Island north to Zanzibar. Famous for its 3,5 million clove trees that has crops three times
as large as in Zanzibar dating from early 19th century when they were introduced from the
Moluccas. With respect to Zanzibar, this island is very laid-back. Among the many things
to visit are the ruins of Ras Mkumbu on the peninsula west of Chake Chake where the Shirazis
settled about 1200 AD and the coral reefs around the island which are rated by divers as the
best in the world.
