Tanga - Bagamoyo - Pangani
- Tanga
Coastal town with sleepy, semi-colonial atmosphere founded by the Germans in late 19th century.
It is the centre for the export of sisal. Things to visit : Amboni Caves and Tongoni Ruins.
Dhows operate between Tanga and Pemba.
- Bagamoyo
Coastal town 75 km north of Dar Es Salaam. Was once the terminal of the slave trade
caravan route from Lake Tanganyka. Later became headquarters of German colonial administration.
History goes back to 14th century when Arabs and Shirazi's from the Persian Gulf were settled
here. The ruins at Kaole can be visited.
- Pangani
Small village north of Bagamoyo and some 50 km south of Tanga. Beautiful coast with many
reefs and islands offshore. You can organise fishing trips from here and snorkelling at
the islands Mawe Mdogo and Mwamba Mawe. Boat trips are possible to see wildlife on Pangani
River.
