The Société d'Études Latines de Bruxelles was founded on July 11, 1936, by a group of professors and alumni of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. The aim of the association was "to promote the Latin studies in Belgium ... by all means available to the association, and in particular by the publication of books and journals, etc." Accordingly, a quarterly journal appeared in 1937; it contained works related to all parts of the Latinitas: texts, literature, history, institutions, archaeology, epigraphy, palaeography, Latin humanists, etc. In 1939, a Collection of books was added to the Journal. Both were named after one of the most eminent latinists to have been born in our countries: Barthélemy Latomus. Born in Arlon in 1485, dead in Coblenz in 1570, poet of merit and author of many philological works, Latomus was a friend of Erasmus. He lived in Trier, Freiburg-im-Bresgau and Cologne, before being designated as a first owner of a lectorship in Latin eloquence in the College founded by King Francis I of France. Latomus left Paris in 1542, and he devoted the rest of his life to the religious quarels of the time, even becoming a Catholic auditor at the conferences of Ratisbon (1546) and Worms (1557). Under such an illustrious patronage, the Journal and the Collection have gradually developped, thanks to a team of devoted volunteers. Only once were all activities stopped, during World War II, when the directorial committee refused to submit the publications to the authorization of the occupying forces. The publication of the Journal and of the Collection was restarted shortly after the Liberation, and has since continued without interruption. On October 4, 1997, the Société d'Études Latines de Bruxelles celebrated the 60th birthday of its Journal by organizing a study day. On that day, Carl DEROUX made a speech, of which the title alone is a summary of the unchanged aim of the Société: "Latomus: 60 years of service to the Latin studies, to research and to culture, in Belgium and in the world."
