Dirk Jacobs is associate professor of sociology (chargé de cours en sociologie) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Francophone university). In addition, he also teaches a course at the Facultés Universitaires Saint-Louis (FUSL) in Brussels.
From 1 October 2004 onwards prof. dr. Dirk Jacobs is associate professor (chargé de cours) in sociology at ULB. He is affiliated to the Institut de Sociologie. He teaches 'Sociologie générale' (bachelor level business administration), 'Histoire de la pensée sociologique' (bachelor level in social sciences, optional course in law, philosophy, history, communication studies and political sciences), 'analyse quantitative en sciences sociales' and 'in depth analysis of migration and integration regimes' (master level sociology and anthropology). Jacobs is part of the research group Groupe d'études sur l'Ethnicité, le Racisme, les Migrations et l'Exclusion (GERME) at the Institut de Sociologie.
Dirk Jacobs (°21/6/1971) has studied sociology at Ghent University (Gent, Belgium, 1993) and holds a doctorate (PhD) in social sciences (Utrecht University, the Netherlands, 1998).
From 1994 to 1998 he was assistant in the department of Algemene Sociale Wetenschappen, Faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen,
Universiteit Utrecht (the Netherlands) and he was affiliated to the research group Onderzoeksschool Arbeid, Welzijn en Sociaal-Economisch
Bestuur (AWSB-ISOR). He then went to the KUBrussel (Brussels, Belgium), where he would remain from 1998 to 2002 as a postdoctoral researcher at the
Instituut voor Politieke Sociologie en Methodologie (IPSoM)
. Dirk Jacobs has then worked as a postdoctoral researcher of the National Fund for Scientific Research FWO - Vlaanderen (Belgium) and was affiliated to the
Instituut voor Sociaal en Politieke Opinieonderzoek (ISPO) of the KULeuven (2002-2004).
During this period, Jacobs has been giving a number of courses. He has taught the course 'Introduction to Belgian Politics and Government' at Vesalius College of the VUB (2000-2001). At the KULeuven Jacobs was one of the substitutes for the course 'inleiding tot de sociologie' (first year of physical education, 2002-2003 et 2003-2004). He also taught the course 'kwalitatieve methoden' (second year of sociology, 2003-2004). After a couple of years as a substitute professor (1999-2001), Jacobs became assistant professor in October 2001 for the course 'methoden en technieken van
sociaal-wetenschappelijke onderzoek' at the KUBrussel. Jacobs was professor for this course until september 2007.
In his PhD-thesis Jacobs looked at the issue of voting rights for foreign residents. The book "Nieuwkomers in de Politiek. Het parlementaire debat omtrent kiesrecht voor vreemdelingen in Nederland en België (1970-1997)" has been published by Academia Press (Gent). The public defense took place on 9 October 1998 in Utrecht. The dissertation was awarded the tri-annual prize Raymond Derine for human sciences (at KULeuven in October 2001).
Main research interests of Dirk Jacobs are (ethnic) minorities, ethnocentrism and political sociology.
Jacobs has published widely on different topics as debate analysis, enfranchisement, multiculturalism, ethnocentrism, European identity, etc., in national and international scientific journals. He has published articles in distinguished international reviews as Social Compass , International Migration Review (IMR), Regional and Federal Studies (RFS), Journal of International Migration and Integration (JIMI) and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies (JEMS). He was on the editorial board of Psychologie & Maatschappij and Tijdschrift voor Sociologie .
