tourism> Hermalle-sous-Huy : The Tourist information office of Hermalle-sous-Huy "La Rawète" informs you about the Ferme castrale of Hermalle-sous-Huy, place of tourism and culture between Liège and Huy, province of Liège, Walloonia, Belgium - its Gourmet Museum and Library.

Tourism

Hermalle-sous-Huy is known all over the world by the art lovers for its Madonna, the Sedes sapientiae of Hermalle-sous-Huy, who inspired the graphic designer Dany Visentin for this logo.

At the center of an important tourist, commercial, scientific, artistic and sports region, between Liège and Huy, close to Bierset and to Tihange, with easy access, only 500 metres from the N-90 Liège-Huy motorway, Hermalle-sous-Huy maintains a countryside calm.

In the heart of the ancient village, elegant houses of the 17th and 18th centuries - among which the native home of the master mason Jean-Gille Jacob, decorated with paintings unique in Europe representing the construction professionals of the 18th century - surround the castle, ringed by moats and its historic farm that you can visit :

The "FERME CASTRALE"
of HERMALLE-SOUS-HUY

These buildings, arranged in a square, around a paved and flowery court where the children can play in complete safety, date mainly from the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.

The main building - facing north-, is distinguished by a tower-porch formerly defended by a drawbridge, which for a long time constituted the main access to the castle. This tower has a portal topped with a brattice decorated with a scroll dated 1642.

One of the most beautiful "wide" barns of the province of Liège (17 m. height, 14 m. wide, 32 m. deep), with three levels (= ground, 1st "balcony", 2nd "balcony"), its framework marked by an arc (= " the diagonal rib "); this barn constitutes the south wing.
Under both floors of the barn, there are two admirable rooms covered with ribbed vaults and traverse ribs dropping again to square pillars. These rooms have been called the "chapter rooms of the castrale Farm" by Paris-Match.

The Gourmet Museum and its souvenir shop are located here, as well as concerts and exhibitions since 1991.
Entrance is through the gate in the high enclosing wall, which leads into a green terrace with a small pond and fresh water fish.

Since 1993 this Ferme Castrale* has housed the non-profit-making organisation Tourist information office "La Rawète"* which is dedicated to the restoration and promotion of the site and of the village, as well as to the protection of the gastronomic patrimony through the collection, classification, study and restoration of objects and ancient or modern documents concerning food, tobacco, history of the cooking and gastronomy (especially in Belgium and particularly in Wallonia).

The "asbl"* possesses a rich library, a very interesting museum, and an inn where visitors can sample recipes from earlier centuries.

    • Exhibitions, concerts, events, frequent and stimulating,
    • almost unlimited parking,
      access for the handicapped,

    • games for children,
    • food prepared according to authentic and regional recipes,
    • an open fire,
    • an interesting Museum and Library,
    • competent, bilingual guides,
    • and especially a typically Walloon welcome

... All these make this place an ideal excursion destination.
