GENERAL

June 2002

Patmos is a hilly island with attractive bays and many small islands all round.
We arrived at Patmos with the hydrofoil Tzina (Kiriacoulis Lines) from Agathonisi. As there is no ticket office in Agathonisi we had to pay on the boat. Be aware! We had to pay 29 Eur (for 2 persons) and received no tickets. This amount was higher than what you pay for the longer trip from Pythagorion to Patmos (which costs 23,36 Eur/2 persons). I could hardly believe this and insisted on having the tickets. Tickets couldn’t be delivered on the boat, but they said we would receive them when we arrived. When we left the boat the crew acted as if they didn’t know us. They told us to go to the office at Patmos port. With great ostentation I took note of the name and number of the vessel, because I felt we were being ripped off as the crew found one excuse after another. At the office nobody was acquainted with what was going on and contacted the captain. In the meantime we knew from the office that a one-way ticket costs 10 Eur. Without one word from us a member of the boat company promptly came to return us 9 Eur and apologized profusely. We didn’t mention it to the official authorities because afterwards the man in charge clearly felt uncomfortable and was so friendly that we decided to close the matter. Later we met some people who had the same complaints about these practices.

ACCOMMODATION

Hotel Effie (in Skala)

When boats dock in a port you will usually see hotel/room owners offering accommodation. So did Hotel Effie, who offered a double room for 25 Eur. On the premises he proposed a somewhat larger room for 30 Eur. The place was very clean and had an excellent location a little back from the promenade.

RESTAURANTS

Ostria (in Skala)

As we are fond of greek food and dining in general we didn’t miss one occasion to visit a restaurant.
In most cases the wine from the barrel is of very goodquality.
Once we visited this place, we kept coming back because the food was excellent and the waiter exceptionally helpful, patient and friendly. We ate small fishes (aqerina), octopus salad (ektapodi xudato), taramo salad (taramosalata), courgette croquettes (kolokuqokeftedej); all of a very good quality and accompanied by Greek music.

Pirofani (in Skala) Next to ‘Ostria’. They serve decent food in a well kept place.

Lambi (in Lambi)

A very nice place to have lunch/dinner: close to the sea with Greek music and not only the often heard popular music.
We tried calamares (
kalamaria), tzaiziki (tzaitziki), their famous fried cheese (saganaki)
Next day we were on the other side of the island, and since we couldn’t find a more charming place we did the trip over again and were not disappointed at all.

PLACES

Skala

The port has a very long promenade and a string of restaurants and a fair amount of accommodation. It is a good starting point to explore the island .

Chora

The trip to Chora is very picturesque with marvellous views to Skala.
The Chora is dominated by the immense Byzantine monastery of St. John, which you should make a point of visiting.
The medieval village has a lot of attractive sights and a maze of streets with whitewashed houses, chapels, captain houses (arcontika). There are many restaurants and shops.
A visit in the early morning is recommended before the tourist busses and other visitors arrive on the scene.

Kambos

A village about 5 km from Skala with a large shady square and some tavernas.
