GENERAL

June 2003 & September 2003

A volcanic island with an active volcano which is mostly visited by daytrippers from the surrounding islands. The best time to explore it is before 11 a.m. and after 15 p.m.
Attractive places are Mandraki, Nikia, Pali (for lunch time) and the volcano trip of course.

ACCOMMODATION

Haritos

An extremely well kept place with swimming pool to the far left when disembarking. The hotel has completely being renovated and the rates are the same as the ones of Porfyris hotel. We paid 30 Euro per day for a double with a simple but tasty breakfast.
A few months later we are in the neighbourhood and will return to Nissyros and the Haritos for a relaxing stay of a couple of days to load up some energy fo the coming winter.

Porfyris !!! Recommended by a friend of us we booked this hotel in advance.
The rooms were not clean and without any charm. The fridge was so dirty that we had to forget about it. Even the swimming pool was a disaster: not completely filled, dirty and full of insects and other rubbish. This hotel is mostly booked by touroperators. A four-day stay was too long and we decided to look for a better choice on the spot. We moved to the Haritos and had a very pleasant stay there.

RESTAURANTS

Ireni (Mandraki)

The second restaurant on your right when coming from the port. They serve basic food, but the atomosphere was very cool.

Irini (Mandraki)

This restaurant on the lively square under the trees had a lot of visitors which seemed a good sign to us. They hadn’t much choice. We had choriatiki, dolmades, gigantes, souvlaki. Tasteful, friendly service but nothing more.

Ouzeri Fabrika (Mandraki)

We are fond of ouzeri style and searched for this place. A great inconvenience is that it situated in a cellar, though there was a small no nonsense garden. They provided very good Greek music. We appreciated the nice food: pittia (local speciality), octopussalad, baked bread (thganoyomo), a kind of spare ribs (bounidia), karafaki ouzo (karafaki ouzo) and 1 kg of wine for 29 Euro.

A good place for colder days.

Panorama (Mandraki)

I regret not having tried this restaurant earlier during our stay because this was simply the best. Every day imaginative freshly prepared dishes. We tried: lasagna with zucchini’s (lasagge me kolokuqakia), fishsoup (yarosoupa), harengsalad (reggasalata), sardines (sardeles), marinated fish – an ideal marriage with ouzo (lakerda), sucked pig with special rice (gourounopoulo me rizi). We only went twice and paid each time appr. 20 Euro. We are lucky to have the opportunity to go back in September.

Ellinis (Pali)

Tastly and correctly served.
They shouldn’t have cleaned fish just under our nose when having lunch. My appetite diminished from minute to minute.

Makis (Pali)

We went twice. The first visit the lady was out and we only could have some basic food, which was very tasty. So we decided to return when the lady was back next day. This visit confirmed our first impression. Well prepared and friendly atmosphere. Greek music on our demand.

PLACES

Mandraki (port)

The port where the boat docks is not the centre of Mandraki life
It’s pleasant to walk around in the web of narrow streets. There are some attractive lively squares which operate as meeting points for the locals. There is a fair amount of eateries.
The income of the houses are often decorated with the typical black and white cobbled patrons
From the monastery high above the village you have splendid views of Mandraki.

Volcano

The more you approach the site the more scenic the landscapes are.
You can walk down into the colourful large crater with some smaller craters inside, steaming continuously. It’s a strange exciting feeling.
Some books pretend that there are no mosquitoes on the island, due to the presence of the still active volcano, but I can assure you that this is not true.
It’s advisable to be there before the tourist busses arrive on the scene.

Nikia

A small village on the crater rim. It has a very attractive main square with 2 tavernas. There are panoramic view points towards the volcano.

Pali

A fishing port with a string of restaurants, our favorite place for lunch time.

Lies

A long stretch along the shore will bring you to Lies, which was completely desolated at that time. The long sandy beach is not very well maintained. The unspiring and ugly snack bar was closed.

Avlaki

The path towards this black stoned almost abondonned port is about 9 km long. It’s a nice trip worth the effort but there are no facilities.

Paleokastro

Remains of an impressive castle with cyclopic walls.

Moni Evangelistras

Reached by an earth path, you just can walk in the small courtyard with an impressive tree at the entrance.
