GENERAL

June 2002

Though it’s not very large, you can easily stay a couple of days to make excursions on foot or even on a motorbike (rentals available).
Quieter than we assumed it would be with a lot of white chapels and small sized churches with their blue domes scattered around the island.

ACCOMMODATION

Hotel Panorama

We checked a couple of rooms and decided that Panorama was the best offer. They all charged (of the three we visited) 20 Eur but the room proposed by Panorama was very clean and spacious. It had a large balcony with a very nice view to Liendos beach as well as to the port. The lady was extremely helpful, friendly and inviting. The only disadvantage being that one of the matrasses should be replaced. The hotel is mostly fuller booked during July and August but June and September offer more vacancies

In front of the hotel (with steps towards the large quay) her son-in-law runs the tarverna ‘I Fotini’, where they prepare a few simple dishes. We had tzaiziki (tzaitziki), taramo salad (taramosalata) and greek salad (cwriatiki) with a bottle white wine and were very satisfied. Thomas (the owner) is proud about how clean the place is kept.

RESTAURANTS

Giannis (in Lipsi port)

It was always hard to find a table here and as this is not surprising, they serve many tasty dishes. Excellent!
Here’s a tip for you! If you like lobster, you should eat it in Lipsi or Fourni. It’s much cheaper (35 Eur/kg) than on the more popular islands, where you have to pay 58 Eur/kg.

Barbarossa (in Lipsi port)

A local person recommended this restaurant, which has a small balcony overlooking the main quay. The owners were friendly and as in many places you have to go into the kitchen to see what they are cooking. However, some of the preparations looked as if they had been warmed up over and over again. We weren’t wrong. One of the plates even had a suspicious smell.
It was the only evening we had any reason to complaint about the quality of the food. We left as soon as we could to forget the whole miserable experience.

Kostas (in Platis Yialos)

A large shady balcony offering a wide range of dishes, all carefully prepared.

PLACES

Lipsi port

The only settlement of importance has an immense quay. During the day it looks a bit deserted, as is the case with a lot of places in Greece, but in the evening it changes into a lively place with a string of restaurants.
On our last day we discovered the central square in the neighbourhood of the dominating church. It is a cosy place with a museum and a couples of kafeneions.

Platis Yialos

A small sandy beach with a good taverna (jumps to restaurants Lipsi). From here you can continue the track to Moschato, though this place looks dirty and in our opinion not worth the trip.

Katsadia

Another sandy beach with a taverna which was not yet open; the smaller taverna a little way back didn’t look inviting so we decided to go back to Platys Yialos where the day before we had had a good time.

Beaches

From Lipsi to Monodendri there is a succession of bays & beaches with very nice views. We explored many places without managing to orientate exactly due to a lack of signs. Some places are really difficult to find as the roads regularly fork left and right.
