GENERAL

June 2003

We went to this island some years ago and wanted to visit it again. It’s very montainous and famous for sponge fishing. It has some natural beauties and is certainly worth being explored.

ACCOMMODATION

Map of Pothia

When disembarking we were contacted by a lady who proposed rooms at the opposite. Though not having good experience with this practice I checked the accommodation and compared it with other offers elsewhere in town.

The spacious rooms (incl. little kitchen and sitting area) on the top floor and the huge balcony with a nice view of the port convinced me to minimize some disadvantages such as the uncomfortable stairway towards it. We only had to pay 20 Euro, which is very cheap for such a place. The very charming lady has also the kafenio more or less next to it that is runned by her husband together with his brother.

RESTAURANTS

Thalomi (Pothia)

Behind the large square in the centre of the town with a treecovered terrace.Customers are nearly all locals. They serve authentic greek specialities at cheap prices. The owner is a very helpful and friendly man. Unfortunately that the inside facilities are so poor.

Rembetikos (Pothia)

We were lucky to discover this place from the first evening. We couldn’t resist in going back every evening. The food was exquise. They had so much choice that we tried every evening something new. We tasted specialities such as: Mirmeli salad (mirmeli salata), pastourma (pastourma), rice with rabbit (mououri), dolmades (ntolmadej), meat in wine sauce (mpekri meze), pork with eggs (kabourma), spaghetti with shrimps (garidomakaronada), fishcroquettes (psarokeftedej), octopus in wine sauce (ctapodi stifado), cod fish with patatoes (mpakaliaroj me patatej). Even the open wine is of a very good quality. All these delicatesses at very moderate prices. When in the neighbourhood I certainly will return. A very good address. In the weekend a two-men-band provides lively music; both having a very good voice and a very rich repertoire. The waiter as well as the staff being extremely friendly.

Kostas (Emborios)

Though advised in several tourist guides, this restaurant dissappointed us.

Galini (Vathy)

A moderate restaurant with standard food. Just good for lunch time.

Paradissos (Vlichadia)

The first restaurant before you arrive to the beach. We had a very tasty meal at reasonable prices.
Kali Kardia (Pserimos)
At the beginning the service was a bit cool but this changed as time went by. All the food was well prepared (kalamaria, octopuscroquettes, dolmades, tomatoes, ½ kg wine and a small bottle of ouzo for 21 euro).

Rita (Telendos)

The first restaurant when disembarking. A nice place with tasty dishes (auberginesalad, taramo, crabcroquettes, tomatoes, wine & ouzo for 20 euro).

PLACES

Pothia (port)

The large busy town with its typical round doomed churches can best be explored by wandering the streets behind the harbourside.
There is a fairy amount of neoclassical houses with iron balconies.
The largest string of restaurants lies in the second part of the harbour.
There is a limited choice of accommodation unless you take the offers from private owners.

Pera Kastro

The ruins of an ancient village high above the Chora are worthwhile the climb; from here you can enjoy splendid views.

Mirties

A small fishing port with a lot of touristic facilities. There are some restaurants and lots of accommodation.
A daily excursion boat is leaving on regular basis from here to the islet Telendos at the opposite. The trip only take a couple of minutes.

Melitsahas

A small bay reached out of Mirties with a couple of restaurants and accommodation.

Massouri

More or less connected with Mirties and providing in the first place touristic facilities

Emborios

A nice panoramic route goes to this very quiet bay with beach, accommodation and a number of restaurants. It’s the last village on the road.

Vathy

A rather spectacular steep fjord which can be admired from the road above when approaching it. It has a small shipyard, a number of tavernas but no beach.
It’s a pity that the vehicles are stationed in front of the quay which don’t allow you to enjoy the closeness of the sea during lunch time.

Platanos

When leaving Vathy going inland you drive along a fertile valley.
The first village ‘Platanos’ is a very quiet place. An unpaved road continues to Metochi and Stimenia, two settlements covered with scattered farm houses though without any charm.
A difficult track leads east to the tiny monastery of Kyra Psili – not of any interest – but with a nice panorama towards a valley. Regrettably we didn’t have the courage to walk along the rim.

Linaria & Kandouni

Small beach resorts.

Kastro Chrisoherias

Above the outskirts of Pothia but you have to pay attention if you don’t want to miss it.
Next to it is the monastery Panagias Eleoussis, closed for visitors.

Vlichadia

A nice small bay with a sand and pebble beach and a couple of restaurants. There is also a museum of submarine finds.

Vothini

Monastery Agia Ekaterini can be reached at a turn-off from the Vothini road. Entrance is strictly forbidden for those not waring long sleeves and skirts or trousers. The complex seemed very impressive from short distance.

Argos

We visited the monastery which normally is not open for public. We had a warm welcome and the few nuns offered us sweets and pittes.

Pserimos

This island can be visited during a trip of about one hour (12 Euro with return).
The only attraction being a very large nice sandy beach with the great advantage esp. for children that the sea goes very slowly to deepness.
There are a couple of restaurants but prices for simple drinks like a tin coke costs 3 Euro.
You can make a nice walk along the track when leaving the boat . Turn at at the right at the junction beyond the church. You’ll meet flocks of goats and will arrive back to the port.

Telendos

As I already mentionned caïques are departing from Mirties.
The quayside as a fair amount of restaurants. There are two easily reachable beaches and the little village gives a cosy well kept impression.
