INTRODUCTION

Juni 2002

A new challenge (visiting some minor islands) was awaiting us. What would life be like on these smaller islands? What could we expect?
With the information about boat schedules and searoutes provided by the Greek Travel Pages (http://www.gtp.gr/) we planned a journey starting from Samos and continuing along Lipsi, Fourni, Patmos, Agathonisi and Arki.
At the end of May it’s much too early to be able to rely on these schedules because they are subject to frequent changes.
Nevertheless, with the exception of Arki, we managed to visit all of them.

GENERAL

The longer we stayed on this unspoilt island the more charming it became. The island is mountainous with spectacular views.
There is a lot of fishing activity. Exportation to Piraeus and other parts of Greece is a daily business.

ACCOMMODATION

Rena Studios

At our arrival we met the owner of Rena Studios. When we told him we would be staying at Toula rooms he was very helpful in showing where we could find the owner. Later during our stay we met him several times and had very pleasant conversations with this considerate and friendly man.

Toula Rooms We received the address of Toula rooms from a Belgian couple we met while waiting for the boat. The recent building is very good situated. The room (25 Eur) has a big balcony with the sea just in front. When possible, we had breakfast on our own terrace; going to the baker’s in the morning is very enjoyable as we were able to observe the unspoilt life of the islanders and practise our Greek, which we started to learn a couple of years ago.

RESTAURANTS

Nikos (the port)

This certainly is the place to be. They offer a wide variety of delicious food. Our favorites being octapus salad and lobster with spaghetti (the first time we tried this unusual combination but certainly not the last time). After the meal, they offer ‘Samos brandy’ (a kind of milder metaxa); in combination with dried raisins, it is perfect to round off a meal (if you haven’t had too much wine!)

Miltos (the port) Next to Nikos. They also offer decent food but the atmosphere at Nikos charmed us right from the beginning

PLACES

Kambos

The main resort is a lively place with a small beach, restaurants, shops …
What a shame that so much rubbish is left behind in almost every corner of this beautiful village.

Kambi

Can be reached by a short cut, which takes about 15 minutes on foot.
Going down to the sandy beach we had to manage more than 200 steps, though there must be an easier way.
There are two restaurants, one of which was not open at that time.

Chrisomilia

Accordingly to the map it seemed quite close, but starting from the port it is 18 km.
The landscape is spectacular. No one should miss this excursion.
The village as a whole is not what we expected, but there it’s possible to make good pictures of idyllic spots.
Walking down to the beach we found a very small taverna where it’s possible to have something to eat. Though beautifully situated, the place is not very clean.

Thimena

The trip with a local boat (you should inquire in advance, at least out of season) gave us a special feeling. We only paid 9 Eur to be taken to the tiny port of Keramodi and to be picked up at an agreed time.
The walk to the main port takes only 20 minutes. There is a small taverna, but we decided to eat at the newly built restaurant in Keramodi (with some brand new rooms) where we had agreed to meet the boatman.
At the time of arrival in Keramodi we were the only visitors and enjoyed a simple but very tasty meal.
