The island Kastellorizo
is also called Megisti. The arrival by plane is spectacular. It is the
most eastern Greek island and lies only 2,5 km away from the southern
Turkish coast. The island is very small, rocky, remote with only one settlement. |

Carretta rooms Though we prefer to look for accommodation
when we get to a place, we reserved because we thought there would be
shortage of rooms. When the offer is limited rooms are mostly booked in
advance. The large rooms (32 € September-2003) are situated in the
criss cross of backstreets. They are very clean and cosy. The only disadvantage
is the lack of a balcony, but who cares when you can relax in one of the
waterfromt taverns. The owner is a very busy man: besides running a shop,
he sells air tickets and takes care of all the administration at the arrival/departure
of the daily planes. Behind his reserved nature you will find a very cordial
person. |

Est. Lazarakis |
We had a nice meal with calamares,
octopus salad, saganaki and a white Ilio wine (35 € - September 2003) |
|
|
Next to Lazarakis. Once we had
tasted the homecooking, we couldn't resist going back.We tried a lot of
different dishes; there was not one we found dissappointing and prices
are very reasonable (25/30 €)Grilled fish (palamida), aubergines,
chicken in lemon sauce, garlic dip, fried cheese, meat balls, small fried
shrimps (garidaki), octopus, salted fish, soup and very good draught wine. The
owner also has brandnew accommodation at very good prices, which we only
saw on photographs. |
|
Batsi |
A lovely bay with a small fishing port; it is the most developped touristic resort on Andros. |
|
Kastellorizo town |
The beautiful u-shaped harbour with its mosque and crystal water gives you a fairy tale impression. The waterfront is lined with pastel mansions, tavernas and a few shops. Watching the daily life - while enjoying a frappe - is a relaxing occupation, as is the case on many Greek islands. In the backstreets there are many abandoned and derelict houses, a fair number is being restored. |
|
Mandraki |
A small harbour on the other side of the hill with a desalination plant. |
|
Kastro |
Ruins of a castle above the quay with splendid views of the harbour and Mandraki. |
|
Lycian Tomb |
It is said to be the only Lycian Tomb found in Greece - the same direction as the Kastro. |
|
Paleokastro |
A nice walk passed the airport road to the former ancient capital is worth the effort. If possible, take the opportunity to watch the sunset from this place. |
|
Moni Ag. Georgiou |
A rather heavy climb up along the white zigzag staircase which you can see from the harbour. The monastery we saw is probably not the one we wanted to see. |
|
Ro |
An islet now occupied by the army, where you can find the grave of an old lady who ran up the Greek flag every day when she was the last inhabitant of the island. |
|
Cave (Spilio) |
A blue cave that can be visited in one of the excursion boats. The entrance is nearly one meter high. |
