That brings us to the Californian craze of 2034: exercising without expensive apparatus. That year the most exclusive health clubs were charging a fortune for gym classes without machines, weights, music or, depending how much you were willing to pay, or how much you had paid your surgeon, clothes. The fashion eventually wore out, of course, but not because people weren't keeping fit by jumping up and down naked. It was because they could only show off one outfit. The least well-heeled (air or liquid damped) American has a wardrobe as big as a department store, and exercising naked was a terrible blow to the profits of clothing manufacturers. A few enterprising designers made small fortunes by charging thousands of dollars for coloured pieces of string to tie around your wrists, waist and whatevers.
