BMW special Z3 roadsters in the USA :  :  01/2001

Special editions of the BMW Z3 roadster will be available next spring. : Production began at the Spartanburg County plant in October and will continue through March 2002, said a spokeswoman for BMW Manufacturing Corp.

"This is what we refer to as our individual car program," said Bunny Richardson, coordinator of corporate communications. "What that means is we offer some packages that are a little bit different." The packages include various colors, two-toned interiors and wheel options. "It's in keeping with the idea that most of our cars are custom built," Richardson said. "This is just offering a little bit of extra specialization." The special edition program will be offered to all 120 BMW markets for $5,000 more than the regular Z3 price -- which starts at approximately $31,000.

BMW prides itself on its customization. "The vehicles we build routinely are very customized and tailored to the customers," Richardson said. "This takes that a step further in giving interiors that are a little different." The special editions won't be mass produced, but Richardson said she wasn't under the impression the number produced would be limited. Richardson isn't sure how many of the special editions will sell in the United States because these types of packages aren't as embraced in the United States. "In overseas markets, people are willing to order what they want and wait for it," Richardson said. "It's not as popular in the U.S. markets because it's not something you can walk in and buy." Richardson said in the United States, people go in and order what they want. "They don't need packages," she said. "These are packages, this is what you get."
