Dear Researchers,

We are a group of year 10 students at the New International School of Thailand; we have done some research to help in your search about how well-known the Flemish people are. The results of our research is in the attachment. Unfortunately some of our research did not get completed so there is no information for some people.

NIST 10C homeroom

Pater Damiaan

There is no information on Pater Damiaan in our school library, no articles at all in encyclopedias and nothing in books. He is not mentioned at all. After interviewing a Humanities teacher in our school, he replied that nothing on Pater Damiaan is taught, and that he is not in any of the textbooks that are used.

Jansenius

After searching by many keywords and attempted looking in encyclopedia, I have found not a single word on this man. In addition, with some help from Mr. Stearns our history teacher, we still did not find anything. After interviewing Mr. Stearns I have found out that he never talk about Jansenius in class and never find anything about him in the textbook.

Eddy Merckx

Jean-Luc Dehaene

Graaf Lamoraal van Egmont

We found no information about Graaf Lamoraal van Egmont in our library, while we do not have anything taught in our school subjects about him.

Wilfried Martens

There is quite a lot of information about Wilfried Martens. There are about 6 books (normal politician book about the 20th century). These books contain about 1-2 paragraphs in them about this person. The history department does not include Mr. Martens in their curriculum.

Leo Baekeland

Leo Baekeland was born in 14 November 1863. He was known as an American Chemist since he has moved there when he went off to college. Although he was Flemish, his work was well known to many people. In my school I have asked a chemist teacher about Baekeland and the response was "No, haven't heard of him before". However, when the teacher asked me about what he did I answered "He invented Bakelite". Then he suddenly got it. Although he was never mentioned in the class but there are studies about Bakelite in the classes of graduate students (grade 12). He now know who he is so he will be mentioned later on in the next Bakelite studies. Tragically he died on the 24th February 1944.

Adrien de Gerlache

After many hours of researching, I find no information of Adrien de Gerlache in the collection of books in our library in NIST. After interviewing Mr. Rogers, which is both Geography and History teacher, I found there is no information about this person in our textbooks either.

Mercator

The NIST library has 3 books that mention Mercator. World Book 2000 - 3 paragraphs of General information. The World Book Encyclopedia - 3 paragraphs of general information. The New Book of Knowledge - 1 paragraph of general information. Mercator is mentioned in the Year 7 classes in our curriculum.

Ortelius

Adolphe Quetelet

We researched Adolphe Quetelet and tried to find out if his name was mentioned in different subjects and books of our school. We tried different encyclopedia's and books in our library, but couldn't find any information or text mentioning him. We also interviewed a science teacher, but found out that he is not mentioned in any of the textbooks used or while teaching in the class.

Andreas Vesalius

Peter Benoit

From our research, in the library. We found 2 reference books on this person. The information was about ¾ of a A4 sheet of paper. The information wasn't very detailed and it was in very small font. The name Peter Benoit is not mentioned in any of the classes in school.

Pieter Breughel de Oudere

Hendrik Consience

There is absolutely no information about Hendrik Consience in our school. We checked the encyclopedia, books and art books and none of them even mention his name. The art department does not include Mr. Consience in their curriculum.

James Ensor

Victor Horta

There is not a lot of information on Victor Horta. There are three encyclopedias with a paragraph on him but no pictures. I have looked in five encyclopedias…. 2 of them had a paragraph on him, 1 had two paragraphs and a picture of his artwork, and the other two had nothing. The art teachers do not know a lot about him, and so teachers do not teach about him in art class.

Hans Memlinc

Johannes Ockeghem

For Ockeghem we found: The Encylopedia of World Biography (volume 4). About 4 pages. The Oxford Dictionary of Music (a paragraph, 10 lines)

Constant Permeke

Pieter Paul Rubens

There is some information on Pieter Paul Rubens in the Library in books. There are no articles on him in encyclopedias. The Internet has very few articles on him, but nothing really useful. After interviewing an Art teacher, he told us that he has books on Pieter Paul Rubens. He had 3 books on him.

Jan van Ruysbroeck

After researching the library for information on Jan van Ruysbroeck. We found a small piece of information. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, page 489, 6 ½ pages. The Encyclopedia of Philosophy, volume 7/8 (index), ¾ of a page

Jan Van Eyck

Jan Van Eyck was born in 1385, 90 somewhere around there. We have discovered that he is an artist and the places where we have found the information were the library. In there, we have found several books about him. Not directly, like that, he has a book all about him but we have the encyclopedia that tells us about him for 5-7 paragraphs. He had done some oil paint work that the art teacher has mentioned in his classes when they do any oil paint work. "It is important", he says "that Jan Van Eyck is one of the first master oil painter". This is also included for teaching composition. The famous picture that is some of his work is Het lam Gods, De Madonna Met De Kahunik. He died in Brugge 9 September 1441.

I am a history teacher at an international school in southern Thailand. We use the American curriculum with textbooks in English and all instruction in the English language. In our European History textbook there are numerous referrals to several Flemish celebrities, though not always delineated as Flemish. Both Andreas Vesalius and Jan Van Eyck have been discussed recently and Wilfried Martens and Rubens in the past few months. The text we currently use is "A History of Western Society," 5th edition written by McKay, Hill and Buckler. I hope this is some help to you and good luck in your research.

Sincerely, Don Cassetty Social Studies Department International School of the Eastern Seaboard Chon-buri, Thailand
